From the pages of The Dogs' Book of Romance, it's clear they do. In this dazzling collection of lush, full-color photographs, extraordinary canine couples reveal with wit and wisdom just what it takes to make romance last a lifetime. 101 Salivations Rachael Hale Bullfinch Press 2003 0821228579 / 9780821228579 New Hardcover Anyone who loves dogs knows that they have their own unique personalities-they may be brave or timid, placid or hyper-but they're always soulful. In this collection of 101 arresting four-color portraits, Hale manages to capture the essential doggishness of her subjects, whether it's Hamish the Chihuahua's minuscule, quizzical face or the quiet intelligence of Loki, a Staffordshire bull terrier mix, sitting patiently with a kitten on his head. Though there are a few gratuitous props-a knitted cap on a Gordon setter, a pearl necklace on a Chinese Crested-the photographs don't descend into the realm of the kitschy and too-cute, partly because the dogs' expressive faces are the focus of the compositions. Hale tosses a few relevant quotes into the mix as well, e.g., Walt Whitman's "The dog is the god of frolic," and P.G. Wodehouse's "It is fatal to let any dog know that he is funny, for he immediately loses his head and starts hamming it up." The appendix, which gives a brief description of each dog's story, adds dimension to the photographs. We learn, for example, that Jabba, an eight-year-old pit bull, is just as shy as she looks. During the shoot, Hale says, she "ran terrified from the room...frightened by a fly." Price:

A Pony in the Picture: Vintage Portraits of Children and Ponies Victoria Randall Ten Speed Press, 2007 1580088813 / 9781580088817 New Hardcover Children everywhere have always loved ponies. Those lucky enough to grow up with horses invariably recall them as the keepers of their happiest childhood memories. But for most, a brief ride on a rented pony was the closest they would ever get to a horse of their own. A PONY IN THE PICTURE is an endearing collection of antique and vintage photographs of children posing proudly with ponies and horses, often taken by itinerant photographers who traveled the countryside, suburbs, and cities. Each image captures a moment in time when it seems that all it took for a child to attain sheer joy was the patient presence of a shaggy Shetland pony and a borrowed cowboy hat. * A sweetly evocative collection of 120 photographic portraits of children and ponies, spanning 1880 to 1990. * Chronicles the use of ponies as "props" in children's portraiture, and documents the development of photography and the popularity of keepsake photos over more than a century. * All the photographs were taken in the United States and Canada, with striking exceptions from Burma, Buenos Aires, and Great Britain. * A perfect gift for horse lovers and vintage photography collectors. Animal Antics - A Photo Expose Lund, John Andrews McMeel 2002 0740727001 / 9780740727009 Hardcover, DJ, New copy 74 pages Ever wonder what really goes on among our four-legged friends after we leave the room? In Animal Antics, the secret is finally out. The animals are having a ball - and reading this book, you will too. Cats ride scooters, ducks dance the cancan, beagles lounge at the spa, and, yes, dogs do play poker! Behind this shocking expose is veteran photographer (and digital-manipulation wizard) John Lund. Lund uses amazing digital sleight of hand to endow a menagerie of animals with eerily and uncannily human qualities. The text of the book is equally playful with tasty morsels of advice like "Learn to pamper your soul," "Sharpen your survival skills," and "Chill out as needed." Audubon's Elephant Duff Hart-Davis George Weidenfeld & Nicholson 2003 029782967X / 9780297829676 Hardcover, DJ New copy Illegitimate, half-French, half-American, poorly educated, chronically short of money and obsessed with birds, Audubon came to England in 1826 to find a publisher for his extraordinary paintings. He insisted that they must be reproduced on double-elephant folio paper - sheets almost 40 inches by 30 - so that even the largest species could be represented life size, and no-one in America had been prepared to tackle such a gigantic task. With his dramatic good looks and flamboyant Woodsman's clothes he attracted attention wherever he went. Drawing on Audubon's journals, letters to his wife and the archives of the families with whom he stayed and worked, Duff Hart-Davis recreates Audubon's twelve years in Britain in search of patrons and publishers. It is an extraordinary story of an obsessive genius and his observations of people, places and events in early nineteenth century England and Scotland. Price:

Betty and Rita Go to Paris Michael Malyszko Chronicle Books 1st Edition 1999 0811823709 / 9780811823708 Hardcover, with DJ New copy Two endearing canines meander through the streets of Paris. This is their own album of their Parisian adventures, and captures all the beauty of the city in wonderful black and white photographs. A trip to Paris can be a culturally enriching experience for anyone, even a pair of rambunctious pooches like Betty and Rita. And while they do soak in some of haute couture, Betty and Rita's main concern is good-old, down-home, butt-sniffin', roll-in-something-dead fun. These are two girls who know how to gnaw on the bones of life and suck out all the marrow.
The girls generously brought their favorite humans along with them on the trip. Michael Malyszko, whose work has been published in 40 countries, photographed the mad escapades while wordsmith Judith Hughes chronicled their trip through the City of Light.

Dead Meat Sue Coe Four Walls Eight Windows 1996 156858041X / 9781568580418 Softcover New Political artist Coe spent years visiting slaughterhouses and meat farms in the U.S., Canada and England. Although she was not allowed to photograph on the premises, she was permitted to draw and sketch, and much of this work is jarringly graphic.
Coe's illustrations, which appear regularly in such publications as the New York Times and the New Yorker, have the sharply lined, affecting realism of a Diego Rivera mural. Her first-person account is matter-of-fact, thoughtful and engaging. Coe's book is political, and she clearly hopes it will make readers think twice about what they put into their mouths, but she does not preach and is unafraid to confront her own complicity: "Every dollar I get drips with blood too," she writes. Her empathetic rendering of the workers she encounters is reminiscent of Studs Terkel at his best, and the parallels she draws between society's treatment of meat animals and its working classes are disturbing and convincing. Cockburn's introductory essay traces the history of the meat industry with his customary shrewd sociopolitical insight, but without falling into polemics. Dead Meat will appeal not just to those interested in animal rights, but to anyone who cares about how society functions.

Dog Dogs Elliott Erwitt Phaidon Press Inc 2004 0714838055 / 9780714838052 Softcover New Copy, some shelfwear and a sticker residue mark on spine Nearly every one of the 500 black-and-white pictures in this book is a miraculous blend of composition and content, placing photographer Elliott Erwitt right up there with the other postwar, 20th-century masters of moment and meaning. Erwitt writes in his introduction, "This is not a book of dog pictures but of dogs in pictures." It is the photograph that counts, above and beyond its subject, for the photographer of genius. But Erwitt is bound to be called a sentimentalist because he photographs dogs, whom we, in our species-centric way, tend to think of as, well, animals. If Erwitt proves anything, however, it is that our close relationship with these furry fellow travelers is due to mutual resemblance. There is a Native American myth that when the world was created, a great fissure began to split the earth. Humans were caught on one side of the chasm, animals on the other. The dog, however, seeing the gap widen, leaped across to the human side, where he has been ever since. This book captures the pleasures of our loyal, dependent friends, as well as their sorrows and disappointment when they are forced to adapt to human callousness, neglect, or even love. Erwitt sees the dignity of the ankle-high Chihuahua; the anxiety of the homeless hound; the smugness of the adored dachshund, sitting on its chaise longue in the noonday sun; the patience of the pom-pommed poodle; and the gormless joy of a homely but well-loved pug. In his vast range of emotion, and in his easygoing but precise mastery of the abstract elements of composition, Elliott Erwitt has made himself the Cartier-Bresson of the canine world Price:
