Five feet long, with luminescent eyes and limb-like fins, this bizarre creature, presumed to be extinct, was discovered in 1938 by an amateur ichthyologist who recognized it from fossils dating back 400 million years. Gorillas Jill Caravan New Line Books 2005 1577171330 / 9781577171331 Hardcover New Copy Gorillas have fascinated humans for centuries. They are one of our nearest relatives in the animal kingdom, yet they are often misunderstood, with an entirely undeserved reputation for being aggressive. Far from resorting to attack, they are the gentle giants of the wild, acting as loving and nuturing parents to their young, and even exhibiting protective behavior in some encounters with people. Genetically they are remarkably similar to humans; like us they are members of the Primate order and their anatomy resembles ours. But more than physical traits link humans and gorillas: perhaps more so than any other nonhuman animal, gorillas are highly intelligent, playful, capable of emotions, and can even laugh and smile. With spectacular photographs and informative text, this volume brings gorillas vividly before us, demonstrating such traits as:
* A sense of community involving mutual caring and cooperation
* Loving and nurturing care for the young
* Playfulness and the creation of games Price:

101 Salivations Rachael Hale Bullfinch Press 2003 0821228579 / 9780821228579 New Hardcover Anyone who loves dogs knows that they have their own unique personalities-they may be brave or timid, placid or hyper-but they're always soulful. In this collection of 101 arresting four-color portraits, Hale manages to capture the essential doggishness of her subjects, whether it's Hamish the Chihuahua's minuscule, quizzical face or the quiet intelligence of Loki, a Staffordshire bull terrier mix, sitting patiently with a kitten on his head. Though there are a few gratuitous props-a knitted cap on a Gordon setter, a pearl necklace on a Chinese Crested-the photographs don't descend into the realm of the kitschy and too-cute, partly because the dogs' expressive faces are the focus of the compositions. Hale tosses a few relevant quotes into the mix as well, e.g., Walt Whitman's "The dog is the god of frolic," and P.G. Wodehouse's "It is fatal to let any dog know that he is funny, for he immediately loses his head and starts hamming it up." The appendix, which gives a brief description of each dog's story, adds dimension to the photographs. We learn, for example, that Jabba, an eight-year-old pit bull, is just as shy as she looks. During the shoot, Hale says, she "ran terrified from the room...frightened by a fly." Price:

A Big Little Life: Memoir of a Joyful Dog Dean Koontz Hyperion 2009 1401323529 / 9781401323523 New hardcover DEAN KOONTZ thought he had everything he needed. A successful novelist with more than twenty #1 New York Times bestsellers to his credit, Dean had forged a career out of industry and imagination. He had been married to his high school sweetheart, Gerda, since the age of twenty, and together they had made a happy life for themselves in their Southern California home. It was the picture of peace and contentment. Then along came Trixie. Dean had always wanted a dog - had even written several books in which dogs were featured. But not until Trixie was he truly open to the change that such a beautiful creature could bring about in him. Trixie had intelligence, a lack of vanity, and an uncanny knack for living in the present. And because she was joyful and direct as all dogs are, she put her heart into everything - from chasing tennis balls, to playing practical jokes, to protecting those she loved. A retired service dog with Canine Companions for Independence, Trixie became an assistance dog of another kind. She taught Dean to trust his instincts, persuaded him to cut down to a fifty-hour work week, and, perhaps most important, renewed in him a sense of wonder that will remain with him for the rest of his life. She mended him in many ways. Trixie weighed only sixty-something pounds, Dean occasionally called her Short Stuff, and she lived less than twelve years. In this big world, she was a little thing, but in all the ways that mattered, including the effect she had on those who loved her, she lived a big life. Price:

A Bloodhound to Die For Lanier Virginia Harpercollins 1st Edition 2003 0060193883 / 9780060193881 Hardcover, DJ, New copy Dog trainer Jo Beth Sidden and her assistant, Jasmine, offer dog-tracking services to the local authorities in small-town Balsa City, Georgia. In Lanier's sixth bloodhound adventure, an older woman with dementia wanders off into the Okefenokee Swamp, and Jo Beth and Jasmine take two canine companions on a perilous mission to find her. Meanwhile, Jo Beth is stalked by an escaped convict named Jimmy Joe, and she tries to decide how she feels about handsome sheriff Hank Cribbs. Gracious, kind Jo Beth is an eminently likable heroine, as is African American beauty Jasmine. Jimmy Joe and his eccentric "kin" are characters right out of The Beverly Hillbillies--over the top but completely entertaining. And, of course, as anyone who saw Best in Show knows, bloodhounds are irresistible. The perfect story to read while sitting in a porch rocker drinking sweet tea.

A Coyote's In The House Leonard, Elmore HarperCollins 006054404x / 9780060544041 1st Edition 2004 Hardcover, DJ, 160 pages. New copy Anthropomorphism in fiction and film is often derided as a cheap trick - but not when Elmore Leonard is writing the dialogue. Leonard's first children's book ( for older children and adults) begins with a beguiling premise: hip coyote Antwan, leader of his pack in the Hollywood Hills, is foraging for garbage when he makes the acquaintance of German shepherd Buddy, a retired film star. Buddy is bored and has decided he'd like the freedom of the coyote's life in the wild, while Antwan, who quickly develops a taste for peanut-butter cookies, is interested in getting to know Miss Betty, a prizewinning poodle who lives with Buddy's family. Antwan successfully passes as a dog, but Buddy resents being displaced as the canine star of the family, prompting Antwan and Miss Betty to hatch a plan in which the German shepherd will be returned to the limelight. The story is good fun, but the real pleasure here, as in Leonard's adult novels, lies in listening to the characters banter with one another. Kids won't get all the Hollywood jokes or pick up the references to Leonard's Get Shorty, but they will respond instantly to the way Antwan and his pals work the humans to their advantage.
A great read for all ages! Price:
